Mia dropped onto the edge of the couch, wrists still bound in front of her with my zip ties.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Horseman immediately shifted farther away. An hour earlier he\u2019d been bragging that he murdered her sister. Now he couldn\u2019t meet her eyes.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I stayed near the coffee table and tried to make myself irrelevant.<\/p>\n\n        <p>It didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Sooner or later Butcher would come back to me.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I only needed Mia to give him something else to think about first.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Butcher said nothing.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo,\u201d Mia said. \u201cYou don\u2019t get to do that. If you know me, I get to know you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou still think this is about what you get?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>She went pale.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Butcher reached behind his head.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Click.<\/p>\n\n        <p>The mask came off.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I already knew. Still, when the man from Lena\u2019s beach photo appeared under the living-room lights, my stomach tightened.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Older now. Thinner. Eyes hollowed by a month of not sleeping enough.<\/p>\n\n        <p>But unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia recognized him immediately.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Her voice dropped.<\/p>\n\n        <p>He set the mask on the table.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cHi, Mia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Horseman stared between them. \u201cWait. What?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Nobody cared.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia said, \u201cWhen did you get back?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThe day my wife died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel pulled a chair across from her and sat.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou went to Lena\u2019s condo that night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Not a question.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia said nothing.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThe building cameras caught you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThe police know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThey know you arrived. They don\u2019t know what happened inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia looked down at the red marks around her wrists.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI told them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou said you dropped something off and left. You said there was no fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Silence.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWas that true?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel waited.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I knew that kind of silence now.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia flexed her fingers.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhat do you want me to say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWould you believe it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cTry me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>She closed her eyes for several seconds. When she opened them, she didn\u2019t look at him.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cDad was in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Nobody interrupted.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI needed money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cDoes it matter?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cIt mattered to Lena.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia\u2019s mouth tightened. \u201cShe said if the bills were real, she\u2019d pay the hospital directly. She wouldn\u2019t give Dad cash. Not a dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel showed no reaction.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou knew how much she hated him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cGo on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI heard it as her judging me. Like I was asking for a handout instead of trying to keep him alive. I wanted her to help once without making me feel dirty for asking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAnd you still heard her answer as no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>I remembered the line in Lena\u2019s journal. <em>I hate Dad, but Mia isn\u2019t Dad.<\/em><\/p>\n\n        <p>I\u2019d used that sentence to build a lie. Now the real woman was sitting in front of me, turning that lie almost true.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWe fought,\u201d Mia said.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAbout money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAt first. Then everything else. Dad. Our mothers. Who abandoned who. Who owed what.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Her voice began to shake.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI called her selfish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou remember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia looked up.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cShe said I was just like him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThen you hit her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo. She shoved me. I shoved back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia stopped. Her fingers locked together until the knuckles went white.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel said her name softly. \u201cMia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>She let out one breath.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI put my hands around her throat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Horseman looked up. I didn\u2019t move. Neither did Daniel.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cHow long?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cDid you know if she was breathing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI didn\u2019t check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>For the first time, panic showed in Mia\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cBecause she stopped moving. I called her name. Shook her. She didn\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel\u2019s voice stayed level.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cSo you decided she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI thought she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>The sentence seemed to lower the temperature in the room. Not <em>I killed her<\/em>. <em>I thought she was dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I looked down before anyone could read my face.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel asked, \u201cThen you called 911?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia closed her eyes.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cPolice?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>A long silence.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI thought if the police came, my life was over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>The sentence sounded familiar in a way I didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia continued. \u201cThere had been stories about attacks on women around the area. I thought if the scene looked like something a stranger had done\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel cut in.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou staged it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>She nodded.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cBalcony?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWriting on the glass?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>A pause.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cLena\u2019s lipstick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Horseman lowered his head. Nobody needed to look at him. His confession had just died a second time.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThen?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cClose to eleven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cShe was still on the balcony?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cDid you come back?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel watched her for a long time.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>My throat went dry.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia looked at him.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou wanted the truth. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNot all of it. You joined the board.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>She stiffened.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cA new account called Fox appeared eleven days after Lena died,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cYou thought if someone on that board claimed the murder, police attention might move?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThen why join?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cTo find whoever knew things they shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cOr to find somebody willing to take the blame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia\u2019s eyes flicked toward Horseman. One glance. Enough.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Horseman swore under his breath.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel continued. \u201cThen he showed up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI didn\u2019t create him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cBut you let him keep talking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cI needed to know if he had really been there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAnd when you realized he hadn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia said nothing.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I finally saw the full shape of the room.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia joined the board because she was afraid. Horseman joined because he wanted to be feared. Daniel joined because he wanted a killer.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Three people arrived at the same place carrying three different lies.<\/p>\n\n        <p>And me? I had only picked the wrong house.<\/p>\n\n        <p>At least that was still the story I preferred.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia asked, \u201cHow did you know Fox was me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAt first I didn\u2019t. Fox kept asking about one murder and never posted anything believable about her own. Then I found the board administrator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>I looked up. So did Horseman.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel went on. \u201cHe kept admin logs, contact information, old message records \u2013 more than users thought he kept.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d Mia asked.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel looked toward the stairs. No explanation necessary.<\/p>\n\n        <p>I pictured the safe on the third floor. The plastic bag. The open eyes.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Mia understood too. Her face drained of color.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Horseman whispered, \u201cThe head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel looked at him. \u201cHomeowner. Board admin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>That was enough.<\/p>\n\n        <p>The house wasn\u2019t random. The head wasn\u2019t a trophy brought here for the meetup. Daniel had found the man behind the board, taken access to the administrator account, and used the man\u2019s house as the trap.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou killed him?\u201d Mia asked.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cHe sold people like you a place to turn dead women into entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThat\u2019s not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only one you\u2019re getting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>I didn\u2019t want more detail. Knowing too much had not improved my night.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Daniel pointed toward Horseman. \u201cI had a man claiming he killed Lena.\u201d Then Mia. \u201cAnd someone who spent months asking questions only family would care about. So I invited both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cTo kill us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cTo find out who was lying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>The empty gun. The questions. The locked door. Everything fit.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Then Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAnd I got an extra guest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>I knew the moment had come. He stood and walked toward me.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cBurglar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYou said you were inside Lena\u2019s condo that night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cMia says she left around eleven. I stepped back.<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cAfter Mia left,\u201d he said, \u201cmy wife was still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cThen how do you know she tried to get her phone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cGuess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <p>He came closer. The front door was too far.
