A thin layer of broth remained at the bottom.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cIt\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cI\u2019ll make it again sometime.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara wiped her mouth with a napkin.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">That was when I saw the inside of her sleeve.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Dark. Soaked.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Before coming, she had sewn an absorbent layer into the cuff of my dress. Hidden behind the bowl, most of the soup had gone down her sleeve instead of her throat. She had swallowed enough to make the motion real.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">A clever plan in the specific way clever plans become stupid when they require voluntarily ingesting an unknown drug.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I wanted to scream at her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Dinner ended within ten minutes.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith suggested Mara wait in the smaller sitting room for Daniel, who supposedly \u201cwanted to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori immediately turned to her mother.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cMom, I need to talk to you.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cTori.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She stopped.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith led Mara down the hall.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cI\u2019m getting sleepy,\u201d Mara said.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith pulled a throw blanket over the arm of the couch. \u201cYou\u2019ve had a difficult week.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Neither of them was talking about sleep anymore.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith left.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara lay down and closed her eyes.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Her breathing slowed. One arm slipped over the edge of the couch.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Within five minutes, she looked like someone who would not know if the room caught fire.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">But the pallor in her face was not acting.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The amount she swallowed had been enough to affect her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I sat beside the couch.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cDo you always have to choose the most dangerous version of a plan?\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">No answer.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara\u2019s real phone was not on her. Before dinner, she had hidden a small recorder in the lining of her purse and set it to upload audio automatically whenever it connected to cellular data. The phone Meredith could see was a decoy.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">If she smashed it, the important part would already be elsewhere.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Nearly half an hour passed.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Nothing.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The quiet began to make even me doubt the setup. Maybe the soup had been a test. Maybe Meredith planned to wait until Mara was fully unconscious. Mara\u2019s body yielded loosely beneath the push.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith exhaled.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Not pleased.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Not angry.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Like someone checking that a lock had engaged.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cI gave you a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She sat in the chair opposite the couch. \u201cAll you had to do was stay away from my family.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara did not move.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cBut you kept digging.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith picked up the decoy phone from the table.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">No passcode.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The most recent folder contained a single file.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">WILLOW_STREET.pdf<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Page one: the old news report.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Page two: Caleb Rourke\u2019s business record.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Page three contained a sentence Mara had invented completely.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">FORMER WITNESS IDENTIFIES THE PERSON WHO HIRED CALEB ROURKE BEFORE THE WILLOW STREET FIRE.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith scrolled faster.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The next page was locked.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">FULL FILE HAS BEEN SENT TO A THIRD PARTY.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Her fingers tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cRourke\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I did not breathe anymore, yet I felt myself stop breathing.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">If she knew nothing about him, the first question should have been Who is Caleb Rourke?<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Instead she knew he was dead.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The phone buzzed.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">A message appeared at the time Mara had programmed.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Vehicle reported near the Hale property the night of the fire has been identified.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith shot to her feet.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cBullshit.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She paced two steps, then looked back at the screen.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cThe car wasn\u2019t in front of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Silence.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cIt was on the service road behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She stopped.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">So did I.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The newspaper had never published a location.
