Mara arrived exactly on time wearing one of my light-colored dresses, hair tied low.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Before she got out of the rideshare, her reflection in the window startled me.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">For one instant, I was not sure which of us I was looking at.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She had worn me too long.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith opened the front door herself.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cClaire?\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cYes, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cCome in. Under different circumstances, I might have liked her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara stepped inside.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The lock clicked behind us.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She glanced back.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Meredith caught it.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cHabit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara smiled. \u201cMine too.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The first exchange between them was polite enough that no one could reasonably call it a threat.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cIs Mr. Hale home?\u201d Mara asked.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cWork. He may be late.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori was in the living room.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She looked thinner than she had at school. No careful makeup. No crowd orbiting her. Tori knows she crossed lines.
