Her makeup was careful, but her eyes were swollen from lack of sleep. For two days, district investigators and police had been interviewing students about Warren and the older complaints.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She did not start a fight.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">At break, she dragged a chair to Mara\u2019s desk and sat backward on it.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara looked up.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cMy dad asked about you.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The pen stopped for a fraction of a second.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cHe asked what grade you\u2019re in. Who you live with. Heard he took you to urgent care.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cIt was an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cSure.\u201d Tori smiled. \u201cYou\u2019ve had a lot of accidents lately.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara said nothing.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori\u2019s eyes moved to the bandage near her hairline. \u201cThose guys couldn\u2019t finish the job, and then you happen to get hit by my dad\u2019s car.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The words had teeth, but hurting Mara was no longer the real purpose.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori was measuring her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">After a moment, she changed tone, almost casual.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cRemember the equipment room?\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I paid attention.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara asked, \u201cWhich time?\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cThree months ago.\u201d Tori rested her chin on one hand. \u201cI pulled you in there. You kept grabbing that necklace your mom left you, so I ripped it off and stepped on it.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Cold washed through me.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">That never happened.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mom had left me a necklace. It was in a drawer at home. Tori had never seen it.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cDon\u2019t answer,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara looked at her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Then said, \u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The trap closed without making a sound.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori did not grin. She did not celebrate.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Only one finger, tapping the back of the chair, stopped.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cYou cried for an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara looked down at her book. \u201cI don\u2019t want to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Safe answer.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Too late.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori stood. Before leaving, she bent close enough that her hair brushed Mara\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cYou really have changed.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Her voice was almost kind.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cSo much I\u2019m starting not to recognize you.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara looked up.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Behind her was the classroom door, half glass.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori glanced into it.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Her face changed.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">In the reflection, Mara sat at the desk.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I stood directly behind her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">This time I did not look dead.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I wore a clean school sweater, hair tied back, exactly as I had on a hundred ordinary mornings. Our faces nearly overlapped in the glass, similar enough to confuse the eye and separate enough to be two people.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori backed away.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara turned.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The glass reflected only her.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cWhat?\u201d Mara asked.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori left.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I stayed with the empty reflection longer than I should have.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Each day Mara lived as Claire Mercer, the border between us grew thinner.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">What frightened me was not knowing which direction it was thinning.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">That afternoon Tori kept her distance.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Mara did not approach her either. But while packing her bag after the final bell, she paused and looked toward the back of the room.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She knew she had exposed something.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">She did not know how much.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori left first.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The tether let me drift a limited distance from Mara. The farther I pushed, the colder the invisible line inside me became. I made it to the far end of the hallway.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori stood beside a window, phone to her ear.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cIt\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Pause.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cNo. You screwed it up last time.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I forced myself another step. The tether tightened.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cShe\u2019s still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">The voice on the other end said something I could not hear.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori looked back toward the classroom.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cDon\u2019t hurt her yet.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I stopped.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">This was no longer the girl who only struck when angry.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cGrab her.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Another pause.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cFind out who she is.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">I looked toward Mara. She was zipping my backpack, unaware that a conversation forty yards away had changed the objective from punishment to investigation.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori lowered her voice.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">\u201cAnd find out if Claire Mercer has a sister.\u201d<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Cold tracked down my spine.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">For the first time, Mara\u2019s opponent knew something Mara did not know she knew.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">Tori ended the call and went downstairs.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">When Mara reached the front entrance, she paused.<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 1em;\">A black sedan sat across the street beneath dripping maples. Dark windows.
