Deleting it didn\u2019t make the problem disappear. I put the phone on silent and shoved it into a drawer. Mara watched me from the sink.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cYou\u2019re not calling them back?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhat if they call again?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWe\u2019ll deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She gave me a tired look. Since Dad went into the refrigerator, <em>we\u2019ll deal with it<\/em> had become my answer to almost everything. Mortgage. Medication. Dad. The police. Maybe that was how desperate people survived. If tomorrow couldn\u2019t be fixed, you tried to survive today.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Around eleven, my phone buzzed. Motion alert from the door camera. My stomach clenched. For one horrible second, I thought it was someone connected to Dad\u2019s pension plan. It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane stood outside. Dad\u2019s former home health aide.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Mara looked over my shoulder. \u201cWhat does she want?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNo idea.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>The doorbell rang again. Before opening it, I whispered: \u201cTake Lucy into the bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhat about Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I looked toward the refrigerator. \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone near the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I opened the door a few inches. \u201cDiane.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Walter?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhere\u2019d he go?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cBack to his hometown.\u201d The lie came out before I\u2019d finished thinking.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She frowned. \u201cHe\u2019s that sick and you took him on a trip?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHe wanted to go.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cI need to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHe\u2019s not here.\u201d I tried to close the door.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She blocked it with her foot. \u201cWait.\u201d Her voice hardened. \u201cYour father owes me money.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cI paid everything we owed you.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNot wages.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhat, then?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Her eyes reddened. \u201cSomething personal.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I stared at her. \u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cFifteen hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cAsk your father.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cDo you have anything in writing?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cYou think people put that kind of agreement in writing?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I understood about half of what she meant. The other half I didn\u2019t want to understand. \u201cNo proof, no money.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Her face flushed with anger and humiliation. \u201cYou\u2019re going to cheat me because he\u2019s sick?\u201d Her voice rose. Across the hall, a neighbor\u2019s door cracked open. My pulse spiked.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cCome inside.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>It was a mistake. The moment Diane stepped through the door, she sniffed. \u201cWhat is that smell?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Every muscle in my body tightened. \u201cWhat smell?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cSomething\u2019s off.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Mara came out. \u201cProbably food.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane looked toward the kitchen. Toward the refrigerator. I stepped between them. \u201cYou want fifteen hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cI don\u2019t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cThen I\u2019ll wait for Walter.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHe might not be back for days.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cI can wait.\u201d She reached for a chair.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Then the doorbell rang again.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I nearly jumped out of my skin. Another camera alert. This time, I felt the blood drain from my face.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>My older sister stood outside with a large black rolling suitcase. She looked directly into the camera. Then tapped the lens.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Knock. Knock. Knock.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>A chill ran down my back. For no logical reason, I thought about the refrigerator the night before.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cOpen up,\u201d Rachel called. \u201cI know you\u2019re home.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I closed my eyes. I hadn\u2019t even gotten rid of one problem. The next one had brought luggage.<\/p>\n        \n        <p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel came through the door like bad weather. \u201cI\u2019ve called Dad twenty times. What, are you two playing dead in here?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I almost choked. \u201cWhat kind of thing is that to say?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Then she spotted Diane. \u201cWe have company?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cI\u2019m here to see your father.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHe owes me money.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel dropped her suitcase. \u201cOur father owes you money?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane explained. The longer she talked, the colder Rachel\u2019s expression became. When Diane got to the part about a \u201cprivate arrangement,\u201d Rachel gave a short laugh. \u201cYou\u2019re saying Dad slept with you?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWatch your mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cThen explain it cleanly.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cRachel,\u201d I said. \u201cStay out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She pulled out her phone. \u201cThere are two possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane stiffened. \u201cEither you\u2019re lying to extort money from an old man.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel unlocked her screen. \u201cIn which case we can let the police decide.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane\u2019s face changed. \u201cOr you\u2019re telling the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel smiled without warmth. \u201cThen we can still go to the police and explain exactly what the fifteen hundred dollars was for.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane stared at her. I stared at Rachel. Same sister as always. When we were kids, if someone bullied me, Rachel never bothered figuring out who started it. She handled that after the fight.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Diane picked up her purse. \u201cThis whole family is rotten.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel shrugged. \u201cCan\u2019t argue with you there.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>At the door, Diane turned back. \u201cFine.\u201d Her voice was bitter. \u201cI\u2019m done coming here.\u201d Then she looked at me. \u201cBut when somebody else comes asking where Walter is, you can explain it to them.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>The door shut. My relief vanished almost immediately.<\/p>\n        \n        <p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel kicked her suitcase against the wall. \u201cWhere\u2019s Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHis hometown.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cYou are such a bad liar.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cI\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHe\u2019s barely able to walk and he traveled three hours?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cHe insisted.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel stared at my face. When I was a kid, my right eyelid twitched when I lied. She always noticed. I looked away. \u201cWhy are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cDad\u2019s birthday is next week.\u201d She took off her coat. \u201cThought I\u2019d show up.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I froze. Dad\u2019s birthday. I\u2019d forgotten. Suddenly the lie had a deadline.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel headed toward the kitchen. \u201cYou got anything cold to drink?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cIce?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She stopped at the refrigerator. I moved too quickly.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She looked at me. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cFridge is broken.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cThen why is it running?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cThe freezer sticks.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cMove.\u201d She reached for the handle.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I grabbed her wrist. For one terrible second we stood there.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Then\u2014rattle.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Her suitcase moved.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Mara and I turned. The zipper slowly opened from the inside. A small head appeared. Then a five-year-old boy crawled out, hair flattened, cheeks flushed. He sucked in a dramatic breath.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I stared. Rachel looked back. \u201cOh. Right.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>My brain seemed to stop working. \u201cWhose kid is that?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She rolled her eyes. \u201cMine.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I looked at the boy. Then Rachel. Then back at the boy. She\u2019d been gone for years. No one in the family knew she had a son.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>The boy noticed the refrigerator. \u201cI heard somebody say ice.\u201d He smiled at me. \u201cDo you have ice cream?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I stepped in front of the refrigerator.<\/p>\n        \n        <p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n        \n        <p>I found out later Rachel hadn\u2019t kept Noah inside that suitcase for the whole trip. She had only put him in there between the car and my apartment. She was afraid a hallway camera\u2014or someone watching the building\u2014might record the two of them arriving together.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>At the time, I didn\u2019t know any of that. I only knew the whole thing felt wrong.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Rachel\u2019s phone buzzed. She looked down. Her face changed immediately. She declined the call. Then she crossed to the window and pulled the curtains shut.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWho are you hiding from?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNo one.\u201d Too fast.<\/p>\n        \n        <p>She turned toward my security monitor. \u201cHow much can your hallway camera see?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhole hall.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cWhat about the street?\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n        \n        <p>Something in her shoulders relaxed.
